Spring has sprung and it’s a wonderful time to see an alligator as they start waking up from their winter hibernations! Our absolute favorite place to do this is in Jean Lafitte National Historical Park in the Bartaria Preserve. Walk the boardwalk paths through palmetto forests and along the Bayou. You’ll need a car to do this or to sign up for a swamp tour that picks you up downtown and brings you to the park. It’s so worth the drive!
If you’re not up for a little trip out of the city, don’t worry, there are options in town as well. Head over to New Orleans City Park and wander along the bayou by the playground and the iconic Cafe du Monde. With a little luck, you may see an alligator peeking up from the slow moving waters! A short distance away from City Park, is the scenic neighborhood along Bayou St John. Take a walking tour or rent a kayak and keep your eyes peeled for your friendly neighborhood gator!
Craving a sure-fire gator sighting? The Audubon Institute’s Zoo and Aquarium are world-renowned for a reason. Both locations boast incredible alligator exhitis where you can learn all about these toothy neighbors.
